Synopsis[]
Sam didn’t think things could get worse at Thurmond rehabilitation camp. Then the Reds arrive. Everyone assumed the kids with firepower had been killed years ago. Instead they were taken away, brainwashed, and returned as terrifyingly effective guards. To her horror, Sam recognizes one of them: Lucas, the one spark of light in Sam’s dark childhood. Lucas has a deadly secret–he beat the brutal training that turned his fellow Reds into mindless drones. When Sam defends herself against an attack by a vile PSF guard and faces a harrowing punishment, Lucas must risk his everything to save her.
Plot[]
Sparks Rise follows Sam, the friend whose memory of her Ruby accidentally erased. As Reds appear back at Thurmond, Sam sees a childhood friend, Lucas, appearing to be as brainwashed as all the rest. While working, a PSF officer harasses Sam and when she fights back she is punished by being put in a crate. Later that night Lucas sneaks in and comforts her. He retreated into his head during training and resisted their brainwashing. After Sam is grievously injured, Lucas makes an escape plan that is ultimately foiled. Lucas is trained again and this time he cannot escape into his head and is brainwashed.
