They all began to manifest some sort abilities called "Psi".Children that have this "Psi" ability are assigned a colour that matches their specific power Green heightened intelligence, Blue the ability to control objects, Yellow signifies the power to conduct and create electricity and then there are two powers that are considered extremely dangerous Orange and Red. Oranges have the power to control and manipulate the mind causing others to act against their will, think differently and have other concequences that are present in the book. Idiopathic Adolescent Acute Neurodegeneration hits the United States of America leaving a devastating 98% of the people between the age of eight and fourteen dead. The 2% of survivors, nicknamed the psi, gain powerful and sometimes dangerous abilities, which fall into one of five categories; red, orange, yellow, green, and blue. When President Gray realized how numerous the psi were, and how dangerous they were, started the rehabilitation camps system and the Psi Special Forces to start detaining the psi people. After six long years in her camp, Thurmond, Ruby Elizabeth Daly manages to escape and join a tribe of other psi, Liam Stewart, Charles Meriwether and Suzume (Zu) Kimura, who are trying to find East River, which is the hideout for a large tribe of psi who are hiding from the US government.
Ruby Elizabeth Daly is the protagonist of The Darkest Minds. She's an orange who accidentally erases her parents' memories on the morning of her tenth birthday — January 13. Ruby is shipped to Thurmond, one of the rehabilitation camps for the psi people. She has to survive many tribulations that are against her and other psi.
